This book showcases over of our best wood type specimens, including many complete fonts and samples from unusual designs. The novice need not learn much about TeX to prepare a simple manuscript with it.
Of course everyone should read the TeXbook. Learn the principles of beautiful design. But if you are a proficient LaTeX user who is pressed for time, I’d suggest just a few chapters until you get hooked.
I disagree; the TeXbook has very elegant prose, a natural development, and is much more readable as literature. This book is aimed at people who want to use LaTeX for administrative work, such as writing correspondence, performing repetitive tasks or typesetting problem sheets or exam papers. Improvements to the books have followed developments in digital printing technology; they also reflect corrections submitted over the years by thousands of volunteers.
It is particularly valuable where the document, article, or book to be produced contains a lot of mathematics, and where the user is concerned about typographic quality. Not something that just comes up on a random walk through the book store.
